We invite you to reimagine and discuss urban living through a multispecies lens at the inaugural MUST Festival, organized in the city center of Turku on 7-8 June 2024.

The MUST Festival connects the newest scientific knowledge with the perspectives of citizens, activists and city officials. During the festival, participants will learn together about multispecies perspectives and be empowered with the skills and confidence to advocate for biodiversity.

The festival kicks off with invitational events and open Dome Theater experience on Friday June 7. On Saturday, June 8, the festival opens to all Turku residents to jointly experience, learn and discuss human-nature relationships in city life.

Friday Dome Theater experience and Saturday activities at MUST Festival are open to all and free of charge (except for a guided tour at the Turku Art Museum).

Dome Theater: Listening In to The Sounds of Finland’s Forests

Fri June 7 at 12:00–15:00 and Sat June 8 at 9:00–11:00, Logomo, Junakatu 9

What are the sounds of Finland’s forests? How do humans and other animals react to these sounds? How are these sounds likely to change in the future? Come and join us for an immersive listening experience to learn more about the nature found around you in Turku, and across Finland.

We are bringing an immersive dome theatre to Logomo, which takes visitors on a tour of Finnish forest landscapes. Our theatre surrounds the viewer with the sounds and images of the forest landscape and takes us on a journey from the urban greenspace in the middle of Turku to the more remote parts of the Finnish forest landscape such as Kuhmo and then further north to the Fells of Kilpisjärvi and Värriö Strict Nature Reserve. Our presentation, lasting about 15 minutes, illustrates how human actions change the ‘soundscape’ of our forests and highlights the effects of the decisions we make on the environment we share with other animals.

The performance offers a rare glimpse into our ongoing research, examining how immersive experiences can enhance the connection between humans and other organisms and help consider the impacts of human decision-making on the well-being of both humans and other organisms.

GIS Kiosk: Get to know the immediate surroundings of your home with the help of geographic information describing trees, landscape and nature types

Our Biodiversity Kiosk brings maps depicting natural diversity and urban spaces to the public. We offer you the opportunity to view your home environment from a new perspective by mapping the natural values, asphalt fields, and other factors that affect the lives of all beings in your local area. Join us to explore, with the help of our researchers, the role of nature in your home environment and the impacts of urban spaces on nature.

The kiosk is located in the lobby of the museum, and a museum admission fee is not required to visit it.

Tapaamispaikka Turun taidemuseon edessä, Aurakatu 26

Kuka voi olla paikallinen opas? Miten puistoon on mahdollista tutustua, jos oppaana toimii orava, perhonen, lokki tai voikukka? Mitä uutta siitä voi oppia? Osallistujat saavat ohjeet paikallisten oppaiden kanssa toimimiseen ja lopuksi kokoonnutaan kertomaan minne opastukset meitä veivät ja mikä Puistossa näyttää sen jälkeen erilaiselta. Tapahtuman järjestävät MUST-hankkeen tutkijat.

Opastukseen on vapaa pääsy ja se sopii kaiken ikäisille: voit tulla paikalle yksin, ystävän tai vaikka perheen kanssa. Yhden opastuksen kesto on noin 45 minuuttia. Ei ennakkoilmoittautumisia. Pukeudu sään mukaisesti.

Handle with Care tarkastelee Turun taidemuseon kokoelmaan kuuluvaa nykytaidetta hoivan ja huolenpidon näkökulmasta. Näyttely ehdottaa hoivaa tekemisen ja olemisen tavaksi, jossa eletään vastuullisesti ja vastavuoroisesti niin ihmisten kuin ei-inhimillisten maailmojen kanssa.

Opastus tuo yhteen ajankohtaisia ajatuksia tieteellisestä tutkimuksesta, nykyfilosofiasta ja taiteen teoriasta ja valottaa olemassaolomme monilajisuutta, keskinäisiä riippuvuussuhteita, hoivan vastavuoroisuutta, eläinten ja kasvien aktiivista toimijuutta sekä luonnon jatkuvaa läsnäoloa kaikkialla. Opastuksen kesto on noin tunti. Aikaa on varattu myös kysymyksille ja keskustelulle.

Perspectives on the diversity of human and nature together through the means of co-creation / Näkökulmia ihmisen ja luonnon monimuotoisuuteen yhdessä luomisen keinoin

Tämä tapahtuma antaa tilaa kaikkien turkulaisten – ihmisten ja eläinten – visioille ihmisten ja muun luonnon yhteiselosta tulevaisuuden Turussa. Keskitymme keskustelun, kuvien ja muiden kuvittelun tapojen avulla nostamaan esiin eri näkökulmia tulevaisuuden monilajisesta hyvinvoinnista ja pohdimme näiden näkökulmien välisiä yhteyksiä ja törmäyksiä. Tule mukaan keskustelemaan, oppimaan, tai esittämään mitä monilajinen tulevaisuus Turussa voisi olla.

Mukaan ovat tervetulleita kaikki turkulaiset ja Turussa vierailevat – tosin allergiasyistä joudumme rajaamaan osallistumisen ihmisiin. Varaamme tilaa myös osallistujien kaupunkiluontoa, monilajisuutta tai tulevaisuutta käsitteleville puheenvuoroille, runoille, musiikkiesityksille ja vastaaville.
